Re: “Do the math: More money for education has not solved inequities” [Jan. 14, Opinion]:
As a retired educator, I applaud the factors the editorial board made, particularly making the excellence between equal funding and fairness for college kids. The board is completely right when it says that many college students of poverty begin out behind and by no means catch up. This speaks to the necessity for common pre-Okay packages.
Along with beginning out behind, forces of their lives proceed to trigger issues. Housing instability is a key issue. I taught at Marvista Elementary, which serves Normandy Park, for six years earlier than I had a pupil come or go from my classroom midyear. My colleagues at high-poverty faculties within the Highline district generally had turnover charges of 60% or extra. This indicator of instability within the college students’ lives have to be addressed.
I hope the board will analysis and focus on this subject because it pursues funding points.
